The tender and funny story of a young 19-year-old girl named Rose and the consequences of her coming to live with an eclectic southern family, the Hillyers in 1935. During a sweltering August afternoon Rose, a country girl, comes to the Hillyer's doorstep carrying a cardboard suitcase closed with a piece of string. The first to see her is Buddy, a 13-year-old boy in the throes of puberty.
